Pots and beds
Choose a Grassroots size or enter your own dimensions. Add a quantity for each group of matching containers.
Use your soil footprint and actual soil fill depth.
Scott and Sara's default treatment depths:
Established engineered soil: top 6 inches.
Untilled native soil: top 4 inches.
Tilled native soil: actual incorporation depth.
New soil mix: whole volume.
You can choose top third or enter your own treatment depth.
Sampling depth remains separate.
Combined volume
Dimensions and calculation basis
Presets use the manufacturer's listed dimensions as editable starting values. Grassroots does not consistently identify whether these measure the soil interior, fabric or frame. Measure the soil footprint when a more precise volume is needed.
For rectangular beds, volume uses length, width and soil fill depth. Round pots use a cylindrical estimate from diameter and fill depth. Flexible walls, taper and settling can change the actual volume. Gallon names identify product sizes and are not used as measured soil capacity.
A preset starts with fill depth equal to its listed container height unless the sources disagree. Edit this to match the soil. An explicit treatment depth is used directly and is not divided by three again. Every treatment depth is limited to the available soil fill. Your entered value stays saved, and the result identifies any limit. Quantities multiply each container's volume once.
The earlier top-third description meant the top 6 inches of a typical 18-inch Grassroots bed. It is now an optional proportional setting, rather than the default for every bed height. These are treatment settings, independent of the target profile and the sample depth.
Volumes use US gallons. This planner calculates geometry only. Mineral amounts still require the test results, target profile and an appropriate soil density.
